Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz in an epic three-hour, 55-minute match. After this triumph at the 2025 ATP Finals, Newcombe would go on to claim his fourth Grand Slam title. The latter captivated a raucous Italian home crowd. Sinner proved his elite shot-making ability and Mamba mentality in his latest match as he fought past semifinalist Andrey Rublev 7-6 in a tiebreak, 7-5.
Sinner came through an extremely stressful opening set and saved a set point at 5-6. He hit a monster second serve at 117 miles per hour, winning the point and keeping the match going. He then earned a chance to force a tiebreak, eventually breaking the Alcaraz serve at a key moment to secure the tiebreak set. This impressive victory exposed Sinner’s knack for shining with his back against the wall. It shone a spotlight on the fierce competition between these two up-and-coming tennis stars.
There were a couple of double faults from Sinner in the second-set wobble, but he didn’t get rattled. He managed to break Alcaraz in the sixth game of the set, allowing him to grab the momentum and carry his victory home. With this win, Sinner won his second ATP Finals title in a row without losing a set, further establishing himself as one of tennis’ newest elite players.
With this historic win, Sinner has now entered an elite company. He joins legends Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Lleyton Hewitt as the only fourth men to defend the year-end title since 2001. He and Alcaraz have both experienced extraordinary 2025 campaigns. Combined, they won 14 major titles and ruled the last eight grand slam singles competitions.
Upon sealing his historic victory, Sinner fell to the court in joyous celebration, the significance of the moment clearly washing over him. In his post-match interview, he thanked his chargers and debriefed on the violence of the contest.
“We are individual athletes, but without my team, this is not possible. Celebrating this trophy at the end of the year after such an intense last couple of months, there is no better ending.” – Jannik Sinner
He acknowledged the challenges posed by Alcaraz, stating, “It was tough today. Playing against Carlos, you have to play at your best. I was serving very well at times, but he is one of the best returners in the game. … I am very happy. It was a tough match, but it means a lot to me ending the season like this. It is amazing.”
Their rivalry has become known as “Sincaraz” between friends. This name honors their intense rivalry and the respect they have for each other on the court. As they preview future tournaments, both players are likely to continue to be major forces in professional tennis.
