Jamie Vardy to Depart Leicester After 13 Years but Has No Retirement Plans

Jamie Vardy, the prolific forward and key figure in Leicester City’s recent history, is poised to leave the club at the end of the current season. This begins the end of an impressive 13-year tenure with the foxes. This represents the end of an incredible story arc in his professional life. Even with his days on the pitch numbered, Vardy has proven through his recent comments and actions that he won’t be retiring anytime soon—at least not from football.

The 38-year-old forward came to Leicester from nearby Fleetwood Town for paltry £1 million. Since then, he has written himself into the club’s ambitious history and is well on his way to becoming one of—if not the—Leicester’s greatest ever players. Vardy has never stopped celebrating his improbable coronation at the club. His accolades include a Premier League title, two Championship promotions, an FA Cup and Community Shield.

Vardy’s on-the-field contributions have been plentiful, to say the least. As a result, he’s netted a remarkable 144 goals in the short-lived top flight. This season, he’s already scored eight goals and recorded four assists in league action. Remarkably, he just broke the Premier League record for an 11-game goal streak.

Even as Vardy gets ready to say goodbye to Leicester, he’s rightfully thinking about helping them find success in these last few weeks. He hopes to use that momentum as he enters the next chapter of his career, wherever that might take him. “I’ll keep going until my legs tell me I need to stop. My legs are fine,” he stated, affirming his readiness to continue performing at a high level.

In reflecting on his path, Vardy was nothing but humble. He recognised the early skepticism he encountered when he made the jump from Non-League football to the top tier of English football. “Was the jump too big? I always believed in myself for scoring goals and stuff, but it doesn’t matter who you are. You get to a certain point and that’s probably your limit,” he shared. These feelings reflect his confidence and grit over the course of his career.

As Vardy gazes into the distance, what lies ahead could steer his career in an entirely new and positive direction. “Football is a crazy world. You never know what’s going to happen,” he noted, suggesting that despite leaving Leicester, he is open to new opportunities.

He’ll receive a similarly elaborate send-off from club Leicester City as he heads out east. For him personally, he is leaving a club that has been his home for more than a decade. His influence on the team and the city are beyond question. Fans will most certainly acknowledge his many contributions when he takes the court for the last times.
