Jamie Vardy is considered by many to be the best player in Leicester City’s history. After 13 magical years he is now likely to be on the move from the club. The 38-year-old forward, who transferred to Leicester from Fleetwood Town for just £1 million, has left an indelible mark on the club and the Premier League. As he prepares for his departure at the end of the season, Vardy remains focused on continuing his career at the highest level.
Vardy has had a fairytale club career with the Foxes, including winning a Premier League title, FA Cup and Community Shield. He was a mainstay for the club’s storied 2015-16 Premier League title-winning campaign. In addition, he played a key role in the promotions of two different clubs from the Championship. On top of that, he inspired Leicester to their first ever FA Cup triumph and a Community Shield. Over the course of his career, Vardy has scored a phenomenal 144 goals in senior domestic football. This season as a whole, he’s added eight goals and four assists.
Vardy garnered international headlines during the 2015-2016 Premier League season. He achieved a Premier League record scoring in 11 consecutive games. This strange achievement ensured that he would continue to establish himself as a top striker in all of English football.
As he looks back on an incredible career, Vardy seems to have no doubt that he can keep playing up to his standard for some time yet. He doesn’t plan on retiring anytime soon and is dedicated to continuing to compete. And then I’ll just ride as far as my legs are willing to carry me. My legs are fine,” he stated. Vardy’s unshakeable will to win and confidence in his own ability are clear indicators that he isn’t done among football’s bright young things just yet.
It’s this leap that Vardy knows many were doubtful about when he joined Leicester from non-league football. Was that leap too much? I suppose I always had faith in myself in terms of scoring goals, but you just get to that stage where maybe that’s your ceiling. While there were doubts about those early decisions, he has silenced his critics with his ability on the pitch.
Looking forward, Vardy continues to be encouraged by the direction he’s headed in. “Football is unpredictable,” he said. His attention now is on closing out the season successfully, making sure that momentum continues into whatever openings are presented in the future.
Leicester City is preparing to honor Vardy with a grand send-off at the end of the season, recognizing his contributions to the club over more than a decade. Fans and former teammates alike will be celebrating his memory as one of the club’s all-time greats.
