James Anderson, England’s legendary fast bowler and frontline Lancashire performer, will miss this week’s Championship match against Gloucestershire. He’s currently on the shelf with a calf injury. This is an incredible moment for the cricket community. Anderson might have just finished his record-extending international career, but he’s still playing an important role in the England dressing room post-retirement.
Although retiring from Test cricket last summer, Anderson will play alongside Lightning this summer after signing a one-year deal with Lancashire. He further stressed that any playing commitments with Lancashire should always take priority over England coaching duties. Since his retirement from international cricket, he has been the pace-bowling specialist. This year, he won’t be available for England, as he will be concentrating solely on club cricket.
England are preparing for their summer-long preparations, beginning next month with a one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge. At the same time, the poor selectors need to find future replacements to match Anderson’s priceless experience and skill. They are said to be looking at the appointment of former New Zealand international Tim Southee as a temporary fast-bowling consultant through the home summer. Southee’s deep personal relationship with England head coach Brendon McCullum could further bolster his candidacy for this position.
As well as a very exciting home Test series against India this summer, the Ashes await us in Australia. With Anderson now ruled out, England’s selection committee will surely be eyeing up some developing talents to bring into the fold. Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts will be in contention for a spot in the squad. Gus Atkinson, with only 11 Tests to his name, would be the most senior seamer available for selection. This notable inexperience may turn out to be the team’s biggest hurdle.
Another name to keep an eye out for is Sam Cook, set for a maiden call-up to the England squad. His inclusion would certainly bring an exciting new dynamic to the bowling attack. It would provide artistry and substance as the team enters a hot summer gauntlet of competition.
