The legendary England cricketer, James Anderson, is not done yet! The all-time leading wicket-taker for either men’s or women’s international cricket has been picked up by Manchester Originals for this season’s edition of The Hundred. The tournament, which takes place every four years, starts on August 5. The final takes place at Lord’s on August 31.
At 42 years of age, Anderson’s selection in the wildcard draft is yet another historic advancement in his stellar career. What is remarkable, though, is that he will turn 43 during the tournament. The event is especially momentous, as it marks the first franchise tournament of Anderson’s 25-year professional cricket career.
Anderson had originally signed up for the drafts of both The Hundred and Indian Premier League but was not picked. His dominant displays during this year’s T20 Blast didn’t help. After all, he showed such good form in this competition for the first time in over a decade that surely helped earn his eventual selection. His experience and skill on the field have made him a complex weapon and invaluable asset for the Originals.
When he takes the field with the Manchester Originals, Anderson will be the second-oldest player in The Hundred’s history, after Imran Tahir. Anderson’s inclusion adds a wealth of experience to a squad that features young talent, including a 17-year-old who has yet to play a professional T20 match.
Anderson announced his retirement from international cricket last year. After a one-year deal with Lancashire, he had one eye on remaining in the groove of domestic cricket. His fellow Lancashire player, Rocky Flintoff, has chosen to play for Northern Superchargers, painting a fuller picture of the competition’s competitiveness in The Hundred.
The 16th team added through the wildcard draft allows each team to significantly improve their roster by adding two additional players. Anderson’s choice is the latest tactical decision from Manchester Originals to increase their shot at victory in the competition. His leadership and areas of expertise will be especially important, as the team gets ready for challenges that lie ahead.
