Jamal Adams isn’t the only one ecstatic about starting his ninth NFL season. He’s experiencing a reunion of sorts with head coach Pete Carroll after signing with the Las Vegas Raiders. The 29-year-old safety, known for his dynamic play and leadership on the field, previously played under Carroll for four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
Adams was initially drafted by the New York Jets sixth overall during the 2017 NFL Draft. However, he’s played 85 games over the last three seasons. During that time he has racked up an impressive total of 501 tackles, 21.5 sacks and four interceptions. He was named to two Pro Bowls over three seasons with the Jets. He’s made three Pro Bowl teams and, in 2019, earned a vaunted first-team All-Pro selection. He earned that Pro Bowl inclusion in 2020, as a member of the Seahawks.
Last season, though, was extremely difficult for Adams. He bounced around, suiting up in only five games between the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions. In 2022, he injured his left quadriceps tendon in the season opener against the Denver Broncos. This specific injury weighed heavily on his performance for the entire year.
During the 2023 season, Adams played in nine games before being released in the offseason. His reunification with Carroll is a moment as both try to resurrect the Raiders’ defense.
Carroll conveyed tremendous excitement about the upcoming season and Adams’ inclusion in the team context.
“I’m fired up about the back end. We’re really athletic, fast and big.” – Pete Carroll
Adams’ return to form will be very important for the Raiders as they try to improve their defensive approaches. His experience and skill set should be key in anchoring what should be a vastly improved defense.
