Jalen Milroe Joins Seahawks as an Explosive Quarterback Option

With the Seahawks in desperate need of offensive playmakers, signing Milroe would be a big step toward improving Seattle’s offense. The former Alabama hero quarterback adds a wild card factor. Milroe is an athletic freak with gaudy stats. Allen will primarily be used to back up starter Sam Darnold, but he’ll get a chance to serve as an “explosive weapon” for the team.

During his two seasons as Alabama’s starting quarterback, Milroe rushed for an impressive 1,765 yards, not accounting for the 67 sacks he suffered. He went on to lead the Crimson Tide to a respectable 21-6 record, proving that he knows how to shine when the heat is on. Aside from his rushing excellence, Milroe showed impressive deep passing efficiency. Last year, he passed for 10 touchdowns on throws of 20 or more yards downfield. Wonderfully, he accomplished this without throwing a single interception, finishing second in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

Measuring 6-foot-2 and weighing 217 pounds, Milroe’s athleticism is further highlighted by his reported 4.40-second 40-yard dash time at Alabama’s pro day. This speed, combined with his scoring ability—32 rushing touchdowns over the ’23 and ’24 seasons—positions him as a versatile threat on the field.

Long-term, Milroe’s raw aggregate stats—39 TDs vs 17 INTs over two years—look great for a two-year starter. In particular, he was extremely bad at avoiding copy-pasting his loss to the weekend dump. Where he really shines is on deeper throws. No other NFL quarterback shows this kind of skill, which would be a huge boon to the Seahawks’ overall offensive plan.

Milroe’s work ethic and determination have definitely made an impression on his teammates and coaches. Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator, expressed confidence in Milroe’s potential impact on the team.

“This guy is a tireless worker, highly respected by his teammates, highly intelligent,” – Mike Macdonald

Milroe’s intelligence and work ethic were key factors that stood out during his predraft visit to the Seahawks’ headquarters. His desire to be the best player and leader he can be really stood out to the coaching staff, and they love that passion.

Though Milroe’s accolades are mighty indeed, he won’t be in a position to push Darnold to start right away on USC’s campus. Vigilance would be warranted if Darnold were in line for, say, 90% of the snaps per game. Milroe will add a handful of plays to win a game on his own. Playing like this gives Seattle the ability to ease Milroe into the offense without putting too much on his shoulders.

As Macdonald pointed out, Milroe’s knack for creating second chances is what makes him such a special asset.

“Quarterbacks that extend the play are incredibly difficult to defend,” – Macdonald

The problems that a dual threat quarterback like Milroe can cause are massive headaches for opposing defenses. His ability to create anything from nothing has been proven several times throughout his college career.

“The worst feeling in the world is you play the first play … perfectly on defense, and you defend it and you’re like, ‘All right, sweet. We did it.’ Then the guy still has the ball,” – Macdonald

Seahawks’ coaching staff understands why having a player as explosive and adaptable as Milroe would provide significant value to their roster. Macdonald stressed that if Milroe earns his shots and opportunities to take more snaps, they won’t be afraid to use him.

“However Jalen … earns the right to go out there, then we’ll do that, if it’s going to help the team,” – Macdonald

As he makes the leap into the pro game, Milroe flashes ridiculous physical gifts. He’s a big believer in having a growth and improvement mindset. The Seahawks are counting on that newfound synergy to pay off in their pursuit of success come the rigors of the new season.

“There’s nothing I can’t do on the football field,” – Jalen Milroe

As he transitions into the professional league, Milroe brings with him not only physical talent but also a mindset geared towards growth and improvement. The Seahawks hope that this combination will bear fruit in their quest for success during the upcoming season.
