English Premier League club Luton Town Football Club have appointed Jack Wilshere to be their new first-team manager. While this isn’t his first managerial job, this appointment is historic. At least in the former, Chris Powell will be joining him as an assistant. The former Huddersfield, Charlton, Leicester and Derby manager brings a wealth of knowledge from his previous managerial stints.
Wilshere’s appointment follows an extensive selection process, during which he impressed the club’s hierarchy with his passion for football, determination to succeed, and deep knowledge of Luton Town. He has known the team since he was a child. He’d initially joined Luton, circuitously, as an eight-year-old. That connection has only further added to his enthusiasm about stepping into this new role.
It seems like the ultimate full-circle moment for me. I came to Luton first as a child, at the age of 8 years, ” Wilshere explained. As a Berwick boy through and through, it’s perhaps fate that my first full-time club managerial job is here.
Wilshere trained with Luton Town’s first team at The Brache during the summer of 2022. Because of this experience, he’s been able to reconnect with the club. He knew it was the right time to pursue his coaching dreams. He blazed a trail as a coach that started shortly after his playing days, where he rattled off accolades as one of TFC’s midfield generational players.
“I couldn’t be more delighted to be here – I can’t wait to manage this football club,” he added, expressing his eagerness to start this new chapter in his career.
The club’s chairman, Gary Sweet, expressed similar excitement over Wilshere’s hiring. Jack’s passion, intelligence and fresh approach to the game makes him a perfect fit for the values and ambitions of Luton Town. His experience at the very top make him the perfect match for our next chapter. Talent development Sweet made clear that building talent is one of his core assets.
Wilshere steps into this role following the departure of Rob Bloomfield. Bloomfield was fired just nine months into his term. At the time of Bloomfield’s appointment, Luton Town were still languishing in 11th place in League One. With that difficulty overcome, the club can look forward to a refreshed direction under the developing vision and leadership of Wilshere.
