Reportedly focusing on self-reflection and brick laying Morant returned to the court Monday in style. He returned to the starting lineup for the Detroit Pistons game following a one-game suspension. The suspension, which took place during the Grizzlies’ road loss to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, stemmed from Morant’s conduct during Memphis’ defeat against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.
Those moves in that particular game raised red flags about Morant’s off-court decisions. Therefore, the quarterback’s team decided to deliver punishment for conduct unbecoming of a member of the team. In his absence, Morant averaged 20.8 points and 6.7 assists, becoming the Grizzlies’ second-leading scorer and assist-getter. His Game 1 performance against the Lakers was… well, let’s just say it was underwhelming. He finished the night with just eight points, appearing completely checked out during the second half.
Prior to going up against the Pistons, Morant spoke candidly while sitting in the Grizzlies’ locker room. He didn’t take a single question from reporters. When a single reporter asked the team’s plan to proceed from that point on, Morant, clearly embarrassed, answered that reporter with an edge of sarcasm.
“According to them, probably don’t play me, honestly. That’s what basically the message was after. It’s cool.” – Ja Morant
Interim head coach Tuomas Iisalo sounded a hopeful note regarding Morant’s return. He stated that he and Morant had a discussion to address the situation and emphasized the team’s focus on moving forward.
“We had a discussion, and we’re all looking to move forward and beat the Pistons,” – Tuomas Iisalo
As opposed to the Detroit matchup where Morant took himself out of his rhythm. He conceded to long two’s hasn’t tripled nearly as many shots in the lane. This would be a significant break from his long-standing approach. He’s considered one of the league’s top doghouse comeback finishers inside the restricted area.
The Grizzlies have just gone through incredible turmoil with the firing of head coach Taylor Jenkins. Iisalo made an immediate impact after taking over as interim coach late last season. The team is definitely in a better position to continue to compete and improve once Morant returns.
As the Grizzlies aim to regain their footing in the league, they will rely heavily on Morant’s scoring ability and leadership. His return today against the Pistons will be key for them to figure things out and have a better showing as the season progresses.
