With his best Christopher Walken impression, J.K. Dobbins is officially a Bronco! He signed a one-year deal to add depth to the Eagles running back group. At just 26 years of age, Dobbins represents huge potential. Even with that bright spot, he’s encountered some terrible injury fortune since coming into the NFL in 2020.
Dobbins made an overnight visit to the Broncos’ facility last week, and talks took off with lightning speed from there. He’s only recently signed after missing all of 2021 with a torn ACL. After playing only one game last season due to a torn Achilles, he brings big play ability. Dobbins missed four games last year due to an MCL sprain. When he was able to take the field, he wowed everyone with his freakish talent. Last year, he set career highs in rushing yards, receptions, receiving yards and matched a career-high with nine rushing touchdowns.
In the 2022 campaign, he was most impressive in a Week 6 win against the Broncos. He had a stranglehold on the rushing game, carrying 25 times for 96 yards. All of this has not escaped the notice of his new teammates. Brandon Jones, then in his initial stint as Ravens running backs coach, was optimistic about Dobbins’ potential, saying, “He’s a good back, especially when healthy.”
The Los Angeles Chargers placed a tender offer for Dobbins that was a one-year unrestricted free agent. This gives them exclusive negotiating rights until July 23. However, Dobbins opted to sign with the Broncos before that deadline, indicating a clear interest in contributing to Denver’s offense.
As training camp opens, the Broncos look forward to adding Dobbins to their backfield committee. This rotation, which is still in development and has a lot of potential. The coaching staff intends to make sure he gets ample opportunities on third downs. They’re getting ready for returning to action this season!
Brandon Jones also reflected on the past matchup between Dobbins and the Broncos, saying, “… he was one of the running backs who had one of the better games against us last year, so I’m super excited.” This excitement resonates the kind of buzz that surrounds Dobbins’ arrival to the team as they look to bounce back from a dismal offensive showing in 2020.
