J.J. McCarthy, the highly anticipated No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, continues to navigate the challenges of his rookie season as the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. During a two-day joint practice session with the New England Patriots, McCarthy’s performance showcased both flashes of brilliance and areas needing improvement.
After the first day of practice, early returns were a mixed bag for McCarthy. At one point, he rattled off 13 straight completions with three of those resulting in scores during a six-touchdown night. What’s most impressive is that four of these touchdowns came within the red zone, showcasing McCarthy’s ability to thrive in the clutch. He showed touch and poise on back-to-back big-time downfield completions to fellow #PennState alumni Aaron Jones Sr. and Jordan Addison.
>Even with these accomplishments, McCarthy’s performance has been hailed as patchy at best. During training camp, all he has been focusing on has been building that consistency and rhythm, sometimes fighting with his perfectionist ways. Unfortunately, this long-fought battle has made sailing que passes of receivers. It’s caused him to short-arm throws, one misfire that spiraled into an interception.
Kevin O’Connell, head coach of the Vikings, acknowledged the duality of McCarthy’s performance during practice. He focused on rhythm, timing and spacing with plays from McCarthy’s throws. O’Connell communicated that even though McCarthy made some big moves heads-up, there’s still room to work.
“There’s always ways you could get better,” – Kevin O’Connell
O’Connell stressed that McCarthy exhibited conviction in his decision-making during practice, encouraging signs for the rookie quarterback. He stressed that McCarthy would need to focus on the details. Zeroing in on mechanics, like ball placement for example, will serve to raise his level of play to even greater heights.
“It felt like there was an incredible amount of conviction to some of the decisions he made,” – Kevin O’Connell
McCarthy himself expressed a sense of progress after the day’s practice, stating he felt “a lot more accurate today than yesterday.” He was quick to repeat his desire and need to continue to work on his craft and process with every throw.
“Just being able to take it day-to-day and really hone in on just every single throw,” – J.J. McCarthy
Teammate T.J. Hockenson provided a glimpse into McCarthy’s state of mind. He noticed that they were picking up these first downs that day in practice. McCarthy nevertheless wasn’t fully happy with a few parts of his efficiency.
“We can get a first down, but he’s upset about something,” – T.J. Hockenson
As training camp continues on, McCarthy is still very much feeling his way into a rhythm and learning to be consistent. That’s why his coaches and teammates have confidence he’ll grow into a powerful leader for the Vikings.
