Islamabad Dominates Multan in Thrilling Chase

Islamabad United had a dream start to the 2023 season. They wrapped up their reign by hunting down the Multan Sultans’ target of 169 runs with superiority, achieving it in just 18 overs. The final had played out at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Islamabad’s firepower batting demonstrated clearly why they have been such a successful side, sealing their spot at the top of the table with 10 points.

Multan Sultans lost the toss and batted first against the odds, setting up a competitive score of 168 runs for 5 wickets in their 20 overs. Usman Khan was the star for Multan, smashing 60 runs off just 34 balls to power them to victory. In the penultimate over of the innings he was run out by Sahibzada Farhan. At one stage, Multan looked set for a much bigger total with their score at 116 for 2. They managed just 52 runs off the remaining 39 balls. Even with their consequential first-mover advantage, they didn’t know how to turn it into a win.

The combination of Usman Khan and Muhammad Rizwan was key for Multan. During that fruitful partnership, Rizwan played an equally important knock of 33 runs to take the pressure off Babar. What Yasir Khan added as support, scoring 51 runs before being dismissed by Shadab Khan after building a partnership of 73 runs with Rizwan.

Replying to the mammoth total, Islamabad United’s batting lineup revealed enormous depth and resilience. Andries Gous pitched it beautifully to set the tone. He saw off the innings unabashed, amassing 80 from only 45 deliveries. His spectacular knock featured five sixes with his ramp shot being the most famous, establishing his reputation as a fearless batsman. Gous’s explosive batting was instrumental in Islamabad reaching their target comfortably, as they reached 169 runs in just 18 overs.

Islamabad’s run chase proved to be a fun affair as several players put on noteworthy performances. Among batters, Sahibzada Farhan was the bright spot, bringing 38 runs to the table. Gous capped the game off in style, bringing up his fifth six to seal an emphatic victory for his side.

With this victory, Islamabad United has firmed their grip on the first spot on the league table. On the other hand, Multan Sultans are at the bottom of the table, having only won one match in five games this season.
