With the 25-year-old striker stuck at home in Manchester, he has been training by himself at his old club Real Sociedad. At the same time, his future at Newcastle United is mired in mystery. Isak has recently made headlines as Liverpool make him their latest target of the transfer window. This has pushed him to find alternatives this summer transfer window.
Isak’s initial transfer to Newcastle was agreed on the summer of 2022. He completed the move for a club-record fee of £63 million following three stellar years with Real Sociedad. The 28-year-old has three years remaining on his Newcastle record £150 million deal. Since his arrival on Tyneside, he’s made a tremendous impact leading the team with 62 goals and guiding them to their first Carabao Cup win last season.
Current Training and Injury Recovery
Talented Isak is still concentrating on his recovery from a minor thigh injury. For now, he has opted to use Real Sociedad’s more personal training facilities to heal. This latest decision is indicative of both his ambition and uncertainty about his position at Newcastle continuing to bubble away. As he continues to train away from the Newcastle first team, speculation is only building as to when he will leave.
Though the odds are stacked against him, Isak isn’t giving up on finding a more favorable financial deal. According to media reports, he believes he’s worth £250-300K a week. This faith dovetails perfectly with his personal desire to win silverware at a more premium competitive echelon. This wish for better terms complicates his new reality even more.
Newcastle’s Position on Isak
Newcastle United’s hierarchy know how much interest there is in Isak but are resolute and adamant about the situation. Head coach Eddie Howe stated, “He is still our player. He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him.” This indicates that the club is not eager to let go of a key player who has proven instrumental in their recent successes.
Howe expressed confidence in the squad’s quality following recent signings, emphasizing that “in the end it’s about quality and we have already made some very good signings. In terms of quality, we are already in the right place.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged the delicate nature of transfer negotiations by stating, “I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control.”
Liverpool’s Interest
Liverpool’s interest in Isak appeared earlier this month before they decided to bring in Hugo Ekitike as a replacement. Still, the club seems to be unfazed and remain in love with Isak’s skill set. Head coach Arne Slot affirmed this sentiment when he remarked, “I always say, another thing about Liverpool is that if we see a chance in the market, we never hesitate to bring someone in.” This comment highlights Liverpool’s desire to be proactive and jump on an opportunity when it presents itself.
If Isak departs from Newcastle, the club will receive a significant economic advantage. They are in line to get 10 percent of any euro above €70 million (£60.5 million) from his sale. Real Sociedad would receive two percent of any transfer fee due to FIFA’s Solidarity Programme. This is due to them losing their star man Alexander Isak due to his mid season transfer.
