Irsay Family Takes Charge of Colts Following Jim Irsay’s Passing

The Indianapolis Colts have officially transitioned ownership to the Irsay daughters following the passing of their father, Jim Irsay, on May 21. He died at age 65 from complications due to a heart transplant. Since 1997, he had been the controlling owner of the Colts, a job he inherited after receiving the family franchise from his father, Bob Irsay.

The Irsay family has owned the franchise since 1972, and Jim Irsay made his intentions clear to keep the team within the family. It’s true that he often challenged his daughters to engage with the institution in forms that best matched their personal passions. This strategy created an incredibly positive and collaborative environment between them. In this new regime, the youngest of the daughters, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, will take over as owner and CEO. She has not only been hands-on in the team’s daily management but serves on plenty of ownership committees.

Salesman Casey Foyt will join the company’s ownership and executive vice president. In the interim, Kalen Jackson will take over as owner and chief brand officer. Jackson will be the president of the Indianapolis Colts Foundation. This role seems to deepen the family’s ties to the day-to-day running of the franchise.

This generational transition, we hope, looks to be easier than the last transition from Bob Irsay to Jim Irsay. Nancy Irsay’s long and difficult legal journey began nearly a decade after she initially filed her lawsuit in 1997. She sued Jim and her husband Bob Irsay’s estate executors. By contrast, the transition we are mostly experiencing today has taken place without major public protest.

“We’re keeping 100 percent of the team, and I’m passing it on to my children.” – Jim Irsay

Carlie Irsay-Gordon’s deep involvement in the Colts’ operations positions her well for her new role. She has a profound grasp of the inner workings of the organization. Beyond that, she’s deepened bonds on the team and within the community. Given her early success at demonstrating mandate-fulfilling leadership, it’s a positive sign that she’ll need that leadership soon as she assumes her father’s duties.

The Colts are moving into an exciting new era under the leadership of the Irsay family. Fans and analysts alike will be interested to see how this transition impacts the team’s trajectory and success over the next few years. The commitment to maintaining a family-oriented ownership structure suggests continuity in vision and values, which many fans hope will benefit the franchise in its pursuit of success.
