Terry Rozier, guard for the Charlotte Hornets, recently had an $8.2 million tax lien released. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has begun to act on this exciting new development. This development comes as the county clerk record obtained by ESPN confirmed that the lien was officially filed on October 29. The novel release comes on the heels of a clarification on Rozier’s tax liabilities, which originally stated he owed a significant sum more than he did.
Not to be underestimated, in this business, on November 4, 2023, Broward County filed that lien. Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, blamed it on an e-filing mistake. First, there were accusations that Rozier had $9,000 in back taxes due. But upon closer inspection, Trusty said Rozier was determined to owe just $3,000 for the 2021 tax year.
“Once the accountant clarified the situation with the IRS, Terry was found to owe only $3,000 in unpaid taxes for 2021,” – Jim Trusty
Rozier’s legal troubles extend beyond tax issues. He is now under arrest. Federal authorities charged him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in connection with his alleged role in a massive college basketball gambling scandal. The indictment alleges he provided non-public information regarding his decision to leave a game in March 2023 early to a close friend. That friend or associate then sold that insider information to gamblers.
Rozier’s IRS lien release is a timely global settlement as Rozier now has other and even more serious legal challenges to deal with. He is due to be arraigned in federal court on December 8, in Brooklyn. That next court date will be chiefly concerned with those charges stemming from the gambling scandal. This may have far-reaching implications for his future career.
“That amount has been taken care of and we fully expect the defunct lien to be withdrawn in the near future,” – Jim Trusty
The property Rozier bought in Broward County in June 2021, the tax lien was later filed there. It’s resolved, it would be a huge relief for Rozier. It will be a needed aid to him as he trails through his continuing legal gauntlet.
