Ireland went on to defeat Bangladesh by 79 runs in their opening T20 international match. They went on to achieve victory by 39 runs at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Flight Lieutenant Motiur Rahman Cricket Stadium. Ireland began their innings with such confidence, scoring 40 runs within the first four overs. Sadly for them, they lost Paul Stirling, who managed 21 runs before falling to a catch. Lorcan Tucker was instrumental in helping the Irish go past the 100-run barrier. With Curtis Campher’s wicket falling just before the 17th over at 142 runs, things were not looking good.
Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker built a formidable partnership that was integral in Ireland’s success. Their contribution saw them reach 139-1, building a strong base for a sizeable total.
In the bowling department, Matthew Humphreys shone brightly, claiming four wickets while Barry McCarthy supported him with three wickets of his own. Their combined efforts shackled Bangladesh brilliantly, enabling Ireland to loom large for the remainder of the game.
The win was a historic turnaround for Ireland, coming on the heels of their recent struggles in Test cricket.
“That’s as close to full strength as we’ve had in a long time in the T20. We welcomed back some senior figures and it showed. We came out on top.” – Harry Tector
