Ireland are victorious by 11 runs against Pakistan in a historic win. The first match of the women’s T20 series proved just as enjoyable on a colorful new pitch. The match took place at the cricket ground on a sunny afternoon, where both teams showcased their skills in front of an eager crowd.
Ireland managed to set a target of 142 runs in just 19.4 overs, courtesy heroic knocks from the top-order batters. Amy Hunter spearheaded the attack, making 37 runs before being bowled by Nashra Sandhu. Orla Prendergast provided solid support with a score of 29, while Leah Paul chipped in with a valuable 28 runs. Laura Delany’s enterprising batting had featured Ireland’s only sixes, which added 16 runs to their total.
Pakistan’s bowling assault was led by Fatima, whose masterclass with the ball earned her figures of 4-26. Her efforts helped shut down the Irish scoring and put pressure on them all game long.
Pakistan had a hard time getting into their groove throughout the game. They finished with a modest total of 131 runs, losing all 9 wickets within their allotted 20 overs. Natalia was the top scorer for Pakistan with 29 runs while Rameen scored 27. Though they tried valiantly, they were unable to meet the level of commitment challenged by Ireland.
It was a great all-around performance from Orla Prendergast. She excelled with the ball herself, taking 3 wickets for only 28 runs, and was instrumental in severely limiting the Pakistani innings. Ireland’s Jane Maguire celebrated her 50th cap in style, bowling out Gull Feroza for only five runs.
Despite heavy contributions from Sidra Ameen and Aliya Riaz, who both scored in double digits, Pakistan was unable to come away with a victory. When Prendergast dismissed Muneeba Ali for just five, it added to their woes.
Ireland won the match by the very slim margin of 11 runs. This victory caps an exhilarating first act and promises to charge the atmosphere for the series ahead.
