International Specialists Shine at NFL Specialist Showcase

The NFL Specialist Showcase took place on Monday evening at Lucas Oil Stadium, marking the beginning of the week's events for the annual combine. Organized by Ravens senior special teams coach Randy Brown and Irish kicking coach Tadhg Leader, the showcase featured 27 international specialists, including kickers, punters, and long snappers. The event aimed to give these athletes a platform to demonstrate their skills and draw attention from NFL teams.

Despite the vast seating capacity of 63,000 at Lucas Oil Stadium, only 12 individuals were present in the stands. The low turnout did not diminish the intensity of the competition, as participants divided into teams led by Eagles assistant special teams coach Tyler Brown and then-Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel. This competitive format transformed the typically monotonous kicker workouts into an engaging simulated game environment.

NFL vice president of football development Roman Oben emphasized the importance of such events for discovering talents who might otherwise go unnoticed.

"That's why you do this showcase," said Roman Oben.

The showcase was not merely about competition; it was a strategic effort to alleviate the burden on special teams coaches who previously traveled to individual kicking camps across the country. Oben elaborated on the significance of the event.

"You end up finding those guys that would have signed rookie contracts and been in camp and it alleviates the burden of having these coaches go all over the country to these one-off kicking camps," he explained.

The event formed part of a broader initiative to include specialists in the International Player Pathway (IPP), which expanded to accommodate these players for the first time last year. This expansion provided an opportunity for international athletes to join the combine, contributing to a significant shift in how specialists are scouted by NFL teams.

The evening's competition held particular significance as it was only the second year that international specialists had participated in the combine. In 2024, this initiative led to four specialists being drafted and ten signing free agent contracts with clubs. Despite these successes, more than 60% of specialists did not attend the combine, highlighting the potential untapped talent.

The presence of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and several key special teams coaches, including Broncos special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi, underscored the event's importance. Brown reflected on the showcase's potential for growth and future impact.

"Here we are, Monday night at 7:35 p.m., with 12 people in the stands," Brown noted.

However, he expressed optimism for future editions.

"I can promise you this, next year we are going to be early in the combine."

For many participants, the showcase represented more than just an opportunity to play in front of scouts; it was a chance to prove their place within professional football. Lenny Krieg, one of the kickers, shared his personal experience of participating in the event.

"That's the moment where I was like, OK, the combine is a really big thing," Krieg stated.

He further elaborated on how the structured competition helped him focus and perform at his best.

"It really helped me to get into the zone and feel comfortable, remember that I belong here."

Krieg also acknowledged that his participation was not simply a matter of luck or chance.

"It's not just luck or just a field trip," he affirmed.

The showcase highlighted how strategically assembling a diverse group of international kickers, punters, and snappers could offer new avenues for talent acquisition within the NFL.

"You're helping assemble a group of kickers, punters and snappers that would not have been in Indy otherwise in some sort of singular event," Roman Oben pointed out.
