Bayern Munich started the match strongly, with Michael Olise making an early impact. Even after dominating large stretches of the second half, Bayern were still susceptible to counter-attacks. Just after the hour mark, Josip Stanisic almost leveled the match but headed wide of the mark. Just minutes later, Harry Kane hit the woodwork himself, very nearly putting Bayern ahead before the break. Ironically, this scare only further underscored the home team’s attacking strengths. Their defensive lapses would prove costly.
Caught upfield in a stunningly quick counter, Bayern was hit with a brutal response from Inter Milan. Augusto’s dangerous cross from the right was headed high into the net by Frattesi to bag Inter a late winner. Almost immediately, Bayern Munich’s hopes of even salvaging a point evaporated. Through that match, they were made to face the grim truth of departing their home soil with a loss.
Yann Sommer, Bayern’s 38-year-old goalkeeper acquired in the summer from Monchengladbach, was stellar all-match. He made three key saves against shots from Michael Olise and Raphael Guerreiro. He successfully grabbed the ball at the second attempt with Muller lurking nearby, highlighting the tense battle in front of goal.
