India clipped Pakistan’s wings to emerge as the winner, winning a high-scoring Women’s One Day International match by a convincing 88 runs. The do-or-die clash was held at the stunning Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The clash played out on a colorful fall afternoon. It was packed with great controversy and even more surprisingly, it was crashed by a wave of flying critters!
The Indian side set a formidable target for the Dutch as they managed to score 247 runs in their 50 overs. For India, Harleen Deol was the top scorer with 46 runs. Richa Ghosh offered significant support, going through the innings without losing her wicket on a blustery 35 off 20 balls. Despite India’s solid performance, Pakistan’s bowlers showcased their skills, with Diana Baig achieving commendable figures of 4 wickets for 69 runs, successfully bowling India out for the first time in women’s ODI history on the last ball of their innings.
Pakistan’s chase began on a rocky note. Muneeba Ali became the tournament’s lightning rod for controversy when, after an apparent aborting of a run, she was run out in contentious early match fireworks. Players have been ruled out by third umpire Kerrin Klaaste. The ruling was eventually overturned to ‘out,’ sparking controversy on the field and in the stands. The pressure mounted further when Sidra Amin led the Pakistan innings, notching up a fighting 81 runs off 105 balls. Her efforts were supported by a partnership of 69 runs for the fourth wicket with Natalia Pervaiz.
Yet, the composed Indian bowling attack proved far too tough for the inexperienced Pakistani batting lineup. Leading the blowtorch brigade was Kranti Goud with a brilliant 3/20. Pakistan’s innings concluded at 159 runs in 43 overs, sealing India’s emphatic victory.
The match was not without interruptions. Swarming, dive-bombing insects disrupted the players and forced a two-minute stoppage. In response to this, members of the Pakistan team picked up insect repellents and towels to get rid of the place. This unexpected interruption served to heighten the tension already present in this electricity-filled match.
There was further controversy at the toss when Pakistan captain Fatima Sana was accidentally announced as the winner. This unfortunate switcheroo led to a lot of confusion just minutes before the game kicked off. It was a day punctuated by such incidents, but they made for an alternate, turbulent, but unforgettable clash between these two storied cricketing rivals.
