India Secures Historic Victory Against South Africa in Women’s Cricket World Cup Final

India triumphed over South Africa in the Women’s Cricket World Cup Final, marking a significant milestone in the history of women’s cricket. The final was played in a completely full stadium. India had won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring a considerable 298-7 on a decent batting pitch. Although South Africa went down fighting, they came up just short, getting bowled out for 246. This victory is considered a watershed moment for Indian women’s cricket, reminiscent of the Indian men’s team securing their first World Cup win in 1983.

India’s path to the finals had not been without its challenges, showcasing their resilience and fighting spirit. The team went on to make the finals in 2017 and participated in the T20 version in 2020. This win is their first-ever World Cup victory! South Africa, on the other hand, struggled to convert their semi-final appearances into finals victories, having lost to Australia in 2023 and New Zealand in 2024. Australia has dominated women’s cricket over the past decade, making India’s victory even more significant.

The game started after a short two-hour rain delay, which was no hindrance to the 50 overs bowled. Shafali Verma took the opportunity when No. She put her foot down on India’s innings. Her knock of 87 runs off only 78 balls laid a solid foundation for her team to dominate the match. Deepti Sharma, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, contributed with a solid 58 runs, further bolstering India’s total.

India’s opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Verma started strongly, reaching a remarkable score of 64 without loss during the powerplay. Their aggressive strokeplay threw South Africa off early in the match.

Although South Africa has been a model of ground fielding over the course of the tournament, they struggled in this high-pressure match, dropping five catches. A particularly costly miss occurred when Anneke Bosch dropped Verma at 56 runs, allowing her to continue her innings and significantly impact India’s score.

Deepti Sharma’s efforts were key moments not just with the bat but in the ball. Her performance of 5/39 against South Africa is regarded as one of the best bowling displays by a female cricketer. After taking the last wicket of Nadine de Klerk, she secured India’s historic victory.

Laura Wolvaardt, South Africa’s captain, treated fans to an extraordinary century but was eventually found out by Sharma. The full extent of her efforts wasn’t enough to push her team past the finish line.

After the game, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur spoke proudly about the team’s journey over the course of the tournament.

“After every World Cup we came together as a team and we were discussing what we needed to do. The expectations out of us were that we needed something special. This is the start, and we wanted to break this barrier, and the next plan is to make this our habit. We have so many big occasions coming up, and this is not the end; this is just the beginning.” – Harmanpreet Kaur

That meant the game ended with South Africa requiring 88 runs from the last ten overs. Faced with a monumental run chase, the Red Roses’ effort was valiant but ultimately inadequate as they wilted under pressure from India’s bowlers. This landmark win underscores a historic accomplishment for Indian women cricketers. It acts as motivation for hundreds of thousands of future female cricketers across India.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this team for the campaign that we’ve had. We’ve played some brilliant cricket throughout but we were outplayed today; India played fantastically well. Unfortunate to be on the losing side but I’m sure we’ll grow from this as a group.” – Laura Wolvaardt

The match concluded with South Africa needing 88 runs from the final ten overs. Despite their efforts, they could not close the gap and ultimately succumbed to India’s bowling attack. The victory not only adds a World Cup title to India’s women’s cricket achievements but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of female cricketers in India.
