Inappropriate Incident Shadows Women’s Cricket World Cup in Indore

It was a harrowing experience for the two Australian cricketers, who were in India for the Women’s Cricket World Cup. On Thursday morning, a motorcyclist told players in Indore. He proceeded to take advantage of them during a press event immediately following their stunning upset win against England. The tragic incident should raise alarms over the safety of players throughout the tournament.

When the players were on foot on their way to a café, reportedly the same motorcyclist started to stalk them. Specifically, he allegedly whistled, shouted sexual suggestions, and rode his motorcycle too close to players before eventually striking them, making inappropriate intimate contact. The deputy commissioner of police (crime) in Indore, Rajesh Dandotiya, told TOI about these recent operations. He announced that police have arrested a man in the killing.

This is a sad, terrible, and absolutely unique occurrence. Delegates to the last outpost of the Mughal Empire, India has never been anything but warm and hospitable. For Devajit Saikia, honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), this concern extended to all guests.

Cricket Australia acted quickly in response to the incident to highlight its zero-tolerance stance on this kind of behavior. The union verified that a reckless motorist harassed two members of the Australian women’s team. He subsequently sexually assaulted them as they walked to a coffee house in Indore.

The tragic event has garnered national focus. Shockingly, it occurred during one of the world’s largest international sporting events, an environment where competitors ought to be protected and nurtured. For the record, the Australian women’s team is due to go up against South Africa in their final group-stage match on Saturday — in Indore.

As tournament time approaches, stewards and organizers will need to increase measures to improve safety. Organizers and public authorities are set on making sure all participants are comfortable. Our commitment is still to creating a culture where sportsmanship and respect is the standard, especially in the wake of such tragic events.
