Daniel Hughes was the standout performer for Sussex. His batting achieved new heights in the second day of the Warwickshire match where he managed a season-best 151 runs. It proved to be a key contribution, as Sussex began one of their several strong fights back to counter Warwickshire’s 415 all out in their first innings.
Warwickshire had more than laid the groundwork with centuries from their top three. Yates made the highest contribution as he scored 93 runs, while Hain and Barnard supported him with 87 and 66 runs respectively. This strong platform provided Warwickshire with a daunting total to chase, setting Sussex a mountain to climb.
In response, Sussex demonstrated resilience and determination. His was the fulcrum performance, Hughes anchoring the innings before departing with ten unbowed daring-do on the last ball of the second day. At that point, Sussex reached a commendable score of 278 for three wickets, with Mark Coles remaining unbeaten at 56 runs.

Corey Rocchiccioli was a key performer too, bowling unchanged through two sessions, except for a single over. He picked up all three Sussex wickets, conceding just 94 runs in his 35 overs. His performance was vital to maintaining pressure on the batting team.
It was Hughes’ knock that helped the 29-year-old to his 10th first-class century, continuing to enhance his reputation as one of Sussex’s star men. Their response to Warwickshire’s total is a measure of the team’s mood and desire to remain a force in this match.
