Hovland Withdraws from Final Round at Travelers Championship

Viktor Hovland, the ascendant 27-year-old Norwegian gofer prodigy, WD’d on Sunday during the last round of the Travelers Championship. He chose this path due to a neck injury. That was the case with Martin Kaymer shortly after he took his opening tee shot at TPC River Highlands. He obviously appeared to be in excruciating pain. When Hovland made par on the first hole, it looked like he could be on his way. Unfortunately, he had a rough second hole and made bogey, which forced him to leave the course.

Hovland’s withdrawal is a disappointing setback for the elite young golfer. Just last week, he played some stellar golf, finishing third at the U.S. Open to signal that he’s still got it. His performance at that tournament showcased his competitive edge, as he opened with a solid 4-under 66, followed by a 5-over 75. He had a pretty good stretch going into the Travelers Championship. In fact, he scored four-straight top-25 finishes in his last six outings!

Currently ranked ninth in the Official World Golf Ranking, Hovland has established himself as a formidable competitor on the PGA Tour. His recent play has proven just how much potential this young man has and how good he can be on the course. The neck injury that led to his withdrawal does call into question whether he’ll be ready for matches moving forward.

Hovland’s mind is on rehabbing during the next month. He’ll be looking to be in shape and raring to go for The Open. The championship is one of the most important in all of golf. The impact of Hovland’s presence is especially keenly felt, considering the Norwegian’s recent form and spectacular World Ranking.
