Billy Horschel demonstrated his fearlessness on Thursday at the PGA National when he encountered an unexpected obstacle on the golf course—a live alligator. The incident unfolded swiftly, lasting only about six seconds, as Horschel bravely intervened to handle the situation. While walking to the next tee after completing the sixth hole, he noticed a police officer's unsuccessful attempts to shoo away the gator. With a calm demeanor, Horschel picked up a 60-degree wedge and managed to coax the creature back into the water.
Horschel, who played college golf in Florida, is no stranger to the wildlife that frequently appears on local courses. This familiarity likely contributed to his composed reaction when facing the reptilian intruder. Horschel's experience with such situations dates back to his childhood.
"I grew up with my dad grabbing their tail when they're on the side of the bank and shooing them back in the water," Horschel remarked, indicating his comfort with handling alligators.
"I never touched a tail with my hand, but I've done it with a club. Not that big of a deal," he added, downplaying the significance of his actions.
After successfully guiding the gator away, Horschel resumed his round, finishing with an impressive 5-under 66 in Round 1 of the Cognizant Classic. His performance included four birdies and one eagle, placing him seven shots behind early leader Jake Knapp. Knapp made headlines by shooting a remarkable round of 59, marking only the 15th time such a score has been achieved in PGA Tour history.
Horschel's fearless demeanor on the course is a testament to his upbringing and familiarity with Florida's unique wildlife. His ability to remain composed in unanticipated circumstances highlights his character both as a golfer and as an individual.
