Billy Horschel, a prominent figure in professional golf, recently underwent surgery in Colorado, raising concerns about his participation in the upcoming Ryder Cup. The 38-year-old, currently ranked No. 24 in the Official World Golf Ranking, came to the conclusion that surgery was his best option. This decision was made only after he suffered an injury that made him withdraw from the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans’ team event just two weeks prior.
The Ryder Cup is held September 26-28 at Bethpage Black in New York. This year, this historic event was a major milestone in the annals of professional golf. Horschel is ranked 16th on the U.S. Ryder Cup points list. He’s very much in contention as the top six players after the BMW Championship on August 17 will qualify automatically for the team. The rest will be capped by captain’s picks, with Keegan Bradley reportedly set to complete his 12-player team.
In a video posted on X, Horschel expressed his thoughts on the situation, stating, “It’s an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar, but this is a preventative measure.” His recovery is inspiring — both for his dedication to the process and because he wants to get back into competitive play. He added, “I’m already looking forward to getting the rehab started, getting back to practicing and hopefully returning to the golf course in late summer, early fall.”
Even with this disappointment, Horschel has had one of the best years on tour. He’s turned heads with two top-10 finishes in only 12 events thus far. He was an influential member of the winning U.S. team’s walkover at the 2022 Presidents Cup. This experience is a testament to his skill to deliver under high pressure.
In the lead-up to his rehab process, the golf world—including both fans and experts—will be intrigued to watch Horschel’s progress. His swift return ahead of the Ryder Cup will be key. Such a move would change the U.S. team’s strategy and approach in a major way.
