The Hobart Hurricanes’ win over the Brisbane Heat by 16 runs was their eighth consecutive victory. Unequaled talent on both sides led to a tightly contested high scoring match up. The game, at the historic Blundstone Arena, Danni Wyatt-Hodge was superb with both bat and ball, proving once again why she’s such a key player for the Hurricanes. Officially, this victory was the second straight for the Hurricanes, vaulting them to first place in the entire league standings.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge was a key figure in the match, smashing 45 runs from 31 balls. Her innings featured nine fours and three sixes, giving the Hurricanes’ batting order just the boost it needed. Wyatt-Hodge further underlined her all-round capabilities as she took 2-14 in four overs to showcase her game-changing skills.
After putting up a total of 150 runs, the Hobart Hurricanes left the Brisbane Heat a lot to do to chase down their high score. Georgia Wareham joined the party as she cleared the ropes regularly with a violent 58 from just 32 deliveries. …which gave Linsey Smith the chance to leave her own stamp on the game, taking two important wickets with the ball.
The Brisbane Heat’s chase got off to an electric start, thanks to the aggressive batting and particularly the early intent provided by Mooney. Mooney’s remarkable innings of 105 runs off 73 balls anchored her team’s response and kept hopes alive for a successful chase. Her efforts were ably supported by Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry, both scoring 37 and 33 runs respectively to build partnerships that secured a critical lead. This was not to be, as the team continued to find themselves in difficult situations losing wickets at key junctures.
Sophia Dunkley’s early departure for six runs added to the Heat’s woes, and they ultimately fell short despite Mooney’s heroic effort. Georgia Wareham’s bowling was instrumental in ensuring the Heat’s free-scoring rate was halted. She capped off her spell nicely, taking 2 wickets for only 15 runs in just two overs.
Beyond their impressive individual skills, the game was about how each team utilized those tools to their advantage. Ash Gardner, captaining the Sixers, excelled with the ball, taking five wickets for just 15 runs, while Hayley Silver-Holmes supported with remarkable figures of 3-18. The example of these joint performances underscores how deep and plentiful the talent pool runs across the league this season.
