Derrick White was the one that started it all with a gaudy 25 points. At the same time, rookie sensation Edgecombe shined the brightest during his NBA debut, dropping an amazing 34 points. That’s a new record for highest point total for any debut! The previous player to accomplish such heights was Wilt Chamberlain, who needed 43 points back on October 24, 1959. The way the evening played out on Boston’s TD Garden. The home team then proceeded to wow the crowd with a display of extraordinary athleticism and precision.
Edgecombe’s debut was nothing short of historic. His 34 points rank him third for most points scored in a debut in NBA history. With Tyrese Maxey, who had a game-high 40 points, the duo combined for 74 points. This incredible feat comes within one of tying the record held by James Harden and Christian Wood. Combined, they allowed 75 total points in 2020.
The Celtics’ offensive display was truly impressive, their streak of 16 unanswered points in the third quarter exemplifying their dominance. Derrick White was the key during this run, scoring 13 out of 25 overall points in that fourth quarter only. That’s where veteran players Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum stepped up tremendously. Brown’s 25 points, and the series victory, set up Tatum to win the 2024 NBA Finals MVP award.
Joel Embiid made his long-awaited return to the court for the first time since February, but this time the MVP candidate disappointingly telegraphed the ending. The reigning NBA MVP and two-time league scoring champion was held to four points on 1-of-9 shooting. Though he struggled, physicality wise Embiid still imposed his will on the court. He did impressively battle to lose the rust after his long layoff.
As the game played out, it was apparent Edgecombe’s influence would be felt far beyond his scoring. His knack for scoring at very important times helped carry his squad’s momentum and inspired the spectating masses. All the hype around his debut exemplifies a bright future for him and the franchise.
