Several former high school basketball teammates are now making significant impacts in the NBA, showcasing their skills on a national stage. Cade Cunningham, Moses Moody, Scottie Barnes and Day’Ron Sharpe all spent the 2020 high school season at Montverde Academy in Florida. These gifted athletes made their mark on the hardwood as an electrifying squad. Their chemistry and hard work allowed them to achieve an amazing 25-0 season. This accomplishment crowned their legacy as one of the greatest high school teams in national history.
Cade Cunningham, the first selection in the 2021 NBA Draft, is already establishing himself with the Detroit Pistons as a leader and playmaker. Congratulations to Moses Moody on being drafted to the Golden State Warriors! Just as important to the team’s success has been his shooting skills, particularly from 3-point range. Both players were key to Montverde’s undefeated season, providing a glimpse into how good they could be early in their careers.
Scottie Barnes (once of the Florida State Seminoles, now of the Toronto Raptors), specializes in do-it-all versatility and smothering D. Similarly, Day’Ron Sharpe of the Brooklyn Nets provides a bullish interior force. Their time spent together at Montverde Academy truly laid a great foundation for both of them. It developed enduring connections that continue to deepen their professional experiences today.
Isaiah Joe and Jaylin Williams are two former high school teammates carving out their respective places in the NBA. Together, they make the Oklahoma City Thunder proud. Those common experiences in title matches have them poised very well for the rigors of pro basketball.
Meanwhile, Harrison Barnes and Doug McDermott, who previously played together at Ames High School in Iowa, have found success in the NBA. Their high school team went further than any previous team. They finished back-to-back undefeated seasons in ’09 and ‘10, amassing an incredible 53 straight wins. Both players gained national recognition as Arkansas’ Gatorade Player of the Year in their senior seasons.
This connection between former teammates emphasizes not only their individual talents but the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving success. All four of these athletes are making the most of their state roles. What’s more, they take hard-won lessons from their high school experience with them.
