Herbert Prepares to Return for Monday Night Football After Hand Surgery

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is gearing up to make his return on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, following surgery on his fractured left hand. Despite not practicing on Wednesday, Herbert participated in a walk-through session, which is a non-contact instructional practice aimed at keeping players engaged without full exertion.

Herbert’s injury occurred during the first quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. A blow from Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn during a scramble caused Herbert’s helmet to hit his non-throwing hand. Following the blindside hit, he quickly made his way into the locker room. There, medical staff members soon placed a hard cast and glove on his left hand. He then missed nine plays before coming back onto the field.

Herbert’s thrown a football since the injury. That’s not stopping him from trying again later this week. Overall, he’s pleased with how prepared he is for Monday’s first matchup. He’s confident that he’ll play at a high level, despite not taking any first-team reps in practice this week.

“The plan is to prepare as if I’m going to play and see how the next couple of days goes. Do everything I can to be out there for the team and the guys out there.” – Justin Herbert

Herbert’s injury history is very slightly extensive, he’s only missed practice two times due to an ailment. Last year, he suffered a severe right ankle sprain, and in 2022, he fractured rib cartilage. In each case, Herbert was able to push through the discomfort.

The talented passer has been plagued by hand injuries throughout previous seasons. In 2021, he fractured the middle finger on his left hand, and this 2023 season, he broke the index finger on his throwing hand, forcing him to miss several games. As he continues through his latest recovery, he is more determined than ever to get back on the field.

Herbert’s approach is a testament to his fire and desire to lead this team. He continues to wear a cast to protect his hand from any additional impact. He still has to check in with the team’s medical staff before determining whether he’ll play. If he does suit up come Monday night, he expects to put on that hard cast one more time.

“It’s definitely difficult in this league, but if that’s the case and if Coach feels like I’ll get the best shot for the team, then I trust his decision.” – Justin Herbert
