Brooke Henderson and Minjee Lee turned the CPKC Women’s Open into a major championship spectacle. They were the only duo to each shoot 6-under 65 on Saturday. Their spectacular performance brought them all the way up to a share of 11-under 202. That foreshadowed what would become an exciting final round at the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club.
Henderson, from Smith Falls, Ontario, proved her masterful prowess in an impressive eagle. She holed this drive her on the par-4 17th hole from a greenside bunker for a double eagle. Playing in windy, overcast conditions, she made six birdies and two bogeys on her card. Alongside Henderson’s record-setting performance, the creation of the movement has drawn an unprecedented 1,000 passionate supporters. They cheer (and sometimes cry) as she vies for the #1 position on the world ranking — now occupied by Nelly Korda.
Lee, who recently won her 11th LPGA Tour victory at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June. Despite a dislocated ankle, she recovered in an amazing feat of strength to tie Henderson with her score. She drained an unbelievable long eagle putt on the par-5 12th hole. Besides that, she pulled off a brilliant chip-in for birdie on the par-4 eighth.
As they both headed into that final round, Lee told the Post’s Marc Weiszer he was looking forward to attacking the course with Henderson.
“It’s always been a really special week,” – Brooke Henderson
Henderson echoed this sentiment, stating, “It’s just so exciting to be playing here this week. The crowd’s been phenomenal. Just so happy to be playing at home and hopefully just one more good day.”
Both players have given prodigious performances all through the tournament. In fact, Henderson won the overall title back in 2018 at Wascana in nearby Saskatchewan! With a dramatic final nine holes to play on Sunday, fans can expect a thrilling back-and-forth duel between Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler.
