Middlesbrough’s young guns salvaged a 1-1 draw against Wrexham on Saturday as Hayden Hackney equalised deep into stoppage time. Hackney’s winner came in the 80th minute, ensuring Middlesbrough’s impressive start to the season continued with an unbeaten record at the Riverside Stadium. This ambitious goal was a turning point for Hackney. It was his first since mid-August, and it emphatically proved that he’s returning to form.
Wrexham had jumped out to an early lead in the match, forcing Middlesbrough to make up ground. Thanks to a very smart and timely intervention from Hackney, the home side had to settle for just one point. The young midfielder rose high to beat Wrexham’s George Dobson. He did so with precision, expertly flicking a header past Woodman into the net after an inch-perfect cross from Callum Brittain at the back post.
A Game of Substitutions
During the recent Middlesbrough vs. Huddersfield match, Middlesbrough’s new manager Rob Edwards decided to go big or go home with four subs at the half. This was an effort to shake things up and inject some life in the roster after a dreadful start to the season. One of those substitutions followed was Hayden Hackney, who had been off-colour in a few previous fixtures. Edwards admitted it was an unusual move.
“I have never made four changes at half-time before,” – Rob Edwards
That tactical change immediately hit paydirt as Hackney became a game-changer. He’d already indicated his attacking intent with a couple of dangerous forays into the box before he found the net. His most impressive example was a cheeky back pass to teammate Tommy Conway, which almost set him up for an important goal.
Reflecting on the Match
Edwards was very happy with how his team stuck to their game plan.
“We have executed exactly what we asked the lads to do. We spoke to the lads before the game not to nullify; we wanted to come here to play.” – Rob Edwards
Wrexham’s manager Phil Parkinson acknowledged his team’s performance while lamenting the missed opportunity for a win.
“I am very pleased with the performance, obviously disappointed not to get three points.” – Phil Parkinson
The draw keeps Middlesbrough in a crowded playoff picture in the Eastern Conference as they follow their playoff campaign. The match showcased not only Hayden Hackney’s potential but highlighted the strategic decisions made by Edwards that could define the team’s trajectory moving forward.
