27-year-old pace bowler Gus Atkinson will unfortunately miss out on the Ashes series. His time in the tournament was cut short by a left hamstring injury. As such, he becomes the third England bowler to depart the series. Mark Wood and Jofra Archer withdrew early. There were already big names who had pulled out. Atkinson now faces missing the extremely hotly anticipated final Test against Australia. That competition extension match is scheduled to be played later this week at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The injury happened in the middle of England’s amazing triumph in the fourth Test, in Melbourne. On the second morning of play, Atkinson opened the bowling and bowled through the fourth over. Palka immediately felt a searing pain across his left hamstring. He took off to the immediate right, leaving the soccer field entirely incapable of playing on. Despite his departure, England went on to victory by four wickets later that day.
Atkinson’s injury is an unfortunate twist, especially considering how well he’d adapted to the series after a dismal start. He’d found life difficult in the first two Tests and was wicketless on arrival. Consequently, he was left out of the team for the third Test. He was recalled for the fourth Test, where he took three wickets and contributed 28 runs during England’s first innings, showcasing his potential.
In fact, prior to this unfortunate incident, Atkinson was dealing with his own earlier this year. Even worse for the Eagles, he missed two months with a right hamstring injury. With his latest injury now ruling him out once more, the 24-year-old will need to turn all his talents to recovery and rehabilitation.
With his absence from the final Test, Matthew Potts takes the lead in the race. Now he is set up to replace Atkinson’s production on the club. Potts will take a great chance to prove his talent on a huge stage.
His exit from the Ashes series turns the focus from cricket to Atkinson’s mental health challenges. It further highlights the challenges facing England’s new pace attack. Injuries have done grave damage to the squad. Neither Wood or Archer are able to complete the series due to their respective injuries.
Andrew McDonald, head coach of Australia, commented on the situation:
“We’ve been really clear that we haven’t had a conversation.” – Andrew McDonald
This continued trend highlights both the physical demand of international cricket and how drastically the situation can change for a given player. Atkinson’s exit leaves England’s bowling arsenal considerably dented for the final Test. The team is forced to make rapid adjustments with the loss of their key players.
With just the second of a five-match series left to play, England is at a crossroad. They must regroup and refocus to close strongly and defensively in a tight race with their opponents. The last Test in Sydney will be a crunch match for both sides. They’ll conclude this historic series with plenty on the line.
