The Gujarat Titans lost a drubbing in their last regular season game. Their last match was a crushing defeat to the Chennai Super Kings, by 83 runs. This defeat was their second straight defeat. Consequently, the Titans lost an opportunity to move to first place on the Indian Premier League (IPL) table. This climax played out at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India. The Titans were up against it as they had to chase down a massive target of 231 runs.
The Gujarat Titans quickly came up against a brutal Chennai bowling attack. They were subsequently bowled out for a paltry 147 runs in just 19 overs! Their top-order collapse was soon laid bare as they sank to 30-3 early in the chase. When Shubman Gill, one of the most important players for the Titans, was dismissed soon after, the writing was on the wall. Jos Buttler succumbed to the Chennai bowlers, scoring just five runs before a catch. The plight only deepened when Sherfane Rutherford was sent packing for a four-ball duck, putting the Orange and Black in serious trouble.
Even amid such difficult conditions, Noor Ahmad produced an impressive spell that was supported by Anshul Kamboj’s outstanding bowling effort as well for the debuting Gujarat Titans. Wazim Ahmad (3/21) was the pick of bowlers, with Rhythm Kamboj was brilliant (3-13). Notably, Sai Kishore’s wicket was secured when he was caught behind by Kamboj, adding to the Titans’ bowling highlights in an otherwise disappointing outing.
As regards the Gujarat Titans, they will be waiting for news from other matches to know their playoff schedule. Sadly for them, they will never regain that position, regardless of how the final results play out. This surprise outcome has led to some soul-searching about their work. Today, they’re preparing for the tournament’s knockout stage.
