The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has announced the establishment of a groundbreaking maternity fund aimed at supporting professional women's tennis players. This initiative, fully funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), marks a historic moment in the sport, providing for the first time paid maternity and parental support to players. The fund also offers grants for egg and embryo freezing as well as IVF treatment, paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment within women's tennis.
This landmark fund is a direct outcome of the multi-year partnership signed by the WTA with PIF in May 2024. It is hailed as a transformative step in the sport by prominent player Victoria Azarenka, who has been a vocal advocate for improving maternity and parental support for players. Azarenka, who serves as a representative on the WTA players' council, played a crucial role in bringing this initiative to fruition.
A Game-Changing Initiative
The newly established maternity fund provides eligible WTA players with vital financial support and comprehensive resources to either start or expand their families. This initiative represents a significant step forward in supporting women's rights, human rights, and LGBTQ rights within the sporting community. Despite its ambitious goals, the fund has faced criticism from some players and tennis legends due to Saudi Arabia's contentious record on these issues. However, Azarenka emphasizes that the fund represents a broader global conversation that transcends the boundaries of sport.
“It’s a very global conversation, much bigger than just sport,” – Victoria Azarenka
Azarenka hopes this fund will lead to further benefits and opportunities in other aspects of the women's game, such as childcare and healthcare services. She has been instrumental in advocating for increased protections for returning mothers on the tour since 2019, contributing to changes in the protective ranking system that have already benefitted 50 players.
Addressing Concerns and Criticisms
The maternity fund is not without its challenges. Some concerns have been raised regarding Saudi Arabia's involvement, particularly in relation to its human rights record. Azarenka acknowledges these concerns but remains focused on the positive impact the fund can have on players' lives. She expresses gratitude to PIF for their commitment to supporting the initiative.
“I am very appreciative that they saw the vision (and) I think it’s a big testament that … they were the ones who really wanted to support that and want to continue to grow that.” – Victoria Azarenka
Azarenka's personal experiences have shaped her perspective on the importance of this fund. Having faced doubts and fears during her own journey as a top-ranked player contemplating motherhood, she recognizes the need for structured support systems within the sport.
“Not everybody has the financial opportunity to stop playing and not have any income so that was a very big project of mine." – Victoria Azarenka
Looking Ahead
This maternity fund is expected to have far-reaching implications for the future of women's tennis. By providing financial security and resources, it empowers players to make family planning decisions without compromising their careers. Azarenka believes that initiatives like these are pivotal in breaking stereotypes and creating lasting change within the sport.
“I feel like me and Serena broke the stereotype that in tennis it’s going to be possible and that’s what we’re so proud to do,” – Victoria Azarenka
The WTA's partnership with PIF is seen as a bold move towards inclusivity and progress, despite the criticisms it has attracted. The fund sets a precedent for similar initiatives across other sports and industries, highlighting the importance of comprehensive support systems for athletes who wish to balance their professional and personal lives.
