On November 12, 2016, Rob Gronkowski returned from injury to the New England Patriots. He signed a ceremonial one-day contract, retiring as a beloved member of the team where he played from 2010 to 2018. The announcement sent a warm ceremony at Gillette Stadium into jubilant celebration. Surrounded by family, friends and former teammates, Ollie celebrated his indelible career.
The 36-year-old tight end finished out his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2020-21 season. In his relatively short career in the league, he did some incredible things. He won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and added another championship when he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His all-time best memory as a Patriot was being permanently attached to the incredible comeback 28-24 win vs Seattle Seahawks on 2-1-15. Not surprisingly, that game cemented his legacy within the franchise.
At a Patriots’ Super Bowl ring ceremony, Gronkowski got very emotional over his ties to the Patriots franchise.
“This means a lot to me. Big-time. I’m a New England Patriot. I’m a Patriot for life,” – Rob Gronkowski.
The event underscored Gronkowski’s deep eccentric bond with the team. Patriots owner Robert Kraft rolled out the welcome mat as he returned to Gillette Stadium, focusing on the special relationship that they have.
“By the way, since we play the Jets Thursday night, how about a two-day contract?” – Robert Kraft.
Gronkowski was accompanied by his girlfriend, Camille Kostek. His former teammates David Andrews, Brian Hoyer, Rob Ninkovich showed up, adding to the tumultuous setting heavy with the camaraderie that characterized his brief stay with the team.
Looking ahead, Gronkowski will serve as Keeper of the Light before the upcoming game against the New York Jets, scheduled for Thursday at 8:15 p.m., which will be streamed on Prime Video. He will ring the bell atop the lighthouse at Patriots’ home, Gillette Stadium. This act of goodwill represents his deep and permanent tie to the franchise and its fans.
This retirement also makes his late friend, Susan Hurley’s, dream come true. Even though the retirement decision started last year, Gronkowski is still in his prime at age 30 and largely viewed as a transcendent talent.
As he makes the move from player to team ambassador, Gronkowski’s legacy is obviously still deeply embedded in New England. He began and ended his professional career playing for the New England Patriots. He leaves behind a magnetic legacy for the wider franchise and its loyal, ever-growing global fanbase.
