What a brave off-season decision by the Memphis Grizzlies! They have reportedly reached a deal on a non-guaranteed training camp invitation with center Jock Landale. Now, the Grizzlies are pursuing a potentially key, off-the-radar acquisition to further improve their performance. This addition was crucial, especially considering former Pacers center Myles Turner’s departure to the Milwaukee Bucks in free agency. Landale’s addition is poised to bolster the team’s frontcourt depth and contribute to their evolving strategy under head coach Tuomas Ilsalo.
Of course, Jock Landale’s journey is recent history in the league. He set the third most on-ball screens per 100 possessions among those who have set at least 500 on-ball screens. This efficiency stat is no joke and underlines just how good he is at making plays for his teammates, a vital function of the Grizzlies’ offensive motion offense. Last season, Landale achieved career highs in both field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage, showcasing his growing offensive capabilities.
The Grizzlies’ star player, Jaren Jackson Jr., will benefit from Landale’s skill set on the court. Jackson, who has established himself as a formidable presence, will have additional support as the team navigates through the upcoming season. Zach Edey, last year’s consensus player of the year, is already undergoing surgery on an ankle. He’ll be re-evaluated in 12 weeks, so there’s an urgency for the Grizzlies to shore up their center depth in the meantime.
Landale’s agent Sammy Wloszczowski from SIG Sports confirmed the agreement. This agreement represents a huge win for the player and the institution. The Grizzlies have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing their roster by strategically adding players who can fit well into their system. Under Tuomas Ilsalo’s coaching, the team has set more on-ball screens compared to previous seasons under Taylor Jenkins, which aligns with Landale’s playing style.
The move comes in light of the Grizzlies’ recent loss of center Huff, who averaged 2.7 blocks per 36 minutes with Memphis and was named the G League’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. Huff’s ability to stretch the court as a shooter and protect the rim was comparable to Turner’s, making his departure a significant blow to the team’s defensive strategy. Huff will turn 27 this August. He recently signed his first standard NBA contract, locking him in for the 2027-28 season in only his fourth year.
