Zach Edey, star rookie for the Memphis Grizzlies, is still busy directing those ongoing recovery efforts. Regrettably, this almost certainly ensures he will be sitting out the start of next season in the NBA. Edey had a solid first year, averaging 9.2 points per game. He was a monster on the glass too, finishing as the top rookie at an impressive 8.3 boards per game. He finished with a blistering 58% shooting percentage from the floor. He averaged 1.3 blocks per game in 66 appearances, too.
The decision about Edey’s status follows discussions with the Grizzlies and several other medical experts. His agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, urged allowing Edey to focus on his overall health and performance.
“After consulting with the Grizzlies and multiple specialists, we decided this is the best approach for Zach long-term as it gets him back to 100% with no limitations,” – Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports.
Edey’s historic rookie season led to eye-popping stats and a high level of respect from his fellow players. He ended up with a total of 73 first-team votes and 27 second-team votes, making it onto all 100 ballots for the 2020 NBA All-Rookie Team. He ultimately placed fifth in the NBA’s Rookie of the Year voting. This accomplishment ensured that he would go down as one of the best players during his first year.
The Grizzlies will likely have more information about Edey’s recovery timeline as the regular season draws closer. Fans and analysts alike will be watching his developmental progress with great interest. You can bet that his return would be huge for the team’s resurgence next season.
