The Memphis Grizzlies have made it official, naming Tuomas Iisalo the franchise’s new head coach. With this appointment, he now becomes the first Finnish-born head coach in NBA history. Iisalo enters this new role following a formidable interim stint. He started on this path back in late March when he replaced Taylor Jenkins as head coach. Iisalo also became the first-ever female head coach in professional men’s basketball after an incredible playing career. Most recently, he led Paris Basketball to a EuroCup title, taking home EuroCup Coach of the Year honors in 2024. His astounding success all across Europe drew attention from the Memphis Grizzlies, ultimately sealing his recruitment. There, he demonstrated his remarkable coaching ability, though he often faced playoff tests.
In the playoffs, the Grizzlies were swept out of the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder, ending their remarkable run. Iisalo left a lasting impression on the players. He instilled a culture of spirited and synchronized play that delighted players and fans alike.
The Grizzlies have made the playoffs four out of the past five seasons. Iisalo is all-in on continuing that momentum.
