The Green Bay Packers have submitted a proposal aimed at outlawing the controversial quarterback sneak play, commonly known as the “tush push.” This decision brings attention to the continued discussions over the play, which has been shown to be incredibly successful for one team in particular — the Philadelphia Eagles. The proposal very narrowly addresses situations in which an offensive player shoves a teammate. This particular teammate is positioned directly behind the team’s long snapper who will ultimately catch the snap.
At least that’s the perception as of last month, when the Packers laid out their proposal at the annual league meeting. This proposal would ban a favored tactic that has gained notoriety in recent seasons. As such, his designed run play has only become more difficult for opposing defenses to stop. It’s something the Eagles have had great success with in short-yardage situations. Next week, league officials will re-consider the proposal at next week’s spring meeting. As they do, we hope they’ll take into account how it sets the stage for future play.
New York Giants all world running back Saquon Barkley weighed in on the tush push controversy. He said these words on the eve of this year’s Met Gala. Given all the criticism, he weighed in on the debate by telling critics of this terrible idea, “Learn how to fight it better.” Barkley’s comments underscore a growing sentiment among players. They believe teams should double down on improving their defensive game plans instead of lobbying for rules alterations to stop successful plays.
The proposed rule change aligns with concerns from various teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, and Detroit Lions, who have faced challenges against the Eagles’ short-yardage tactics. The Eagles’ success with the tush push has led some to question whether the competitive balance of the league is in jeopardy.
Looking ahead, the Eagles have a few key matchups. They will open their season at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, September 4. Next, they’ll face off against the Washington Commanders on Saturday, December 20. And a whole lot more! On Wednesday, they’re going to release the entire schedule for “Monday Night Football.” Fans are hoping against hope for an epic Eagles v. Packers showdown.
