Great Britain Cricket Team Takes Major Step Towards 2028 Olympics

And look who’s back on the Olympic stage after an absence of 128 years – the Great Britain cricket team! Plans for an umbrella new organization dubbed GB Cricket are still in their infancy but full of promise. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland are already in talks to establish such an organization. This new group’s main work will be in building the team that gets to the starting line in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Cricket is scheduled to make its Olympic comeback in Los Angeles, where it has not been featured since the 1900 Paris Games. In that historic run, Great Britain won its first-ever Olympic gold medal in the 4x100m relay. The next Olympics will feature a full tournament of six teams for men’s and women’s. They will compete in the T20 format, known for its quick, action-packed, and fun style.

The realiseGB Cricket’s formation is an incredible achievement. Men and women players from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can now all proudly pull on the shirt of their country on an international stage. Scottish and Northern Irish players are specifically eligible for selection. English and Welsh players are automatically brought into the fold with this new team format.

GB Cricket first needs to qualify in order to make it to the Los Angeles Games. Realizing this goal will take deliberate design and outstanding execution in the next few competitions. Their formation as a team marks the return of cricket at the Olympics. In addition, it builds connections between the sport and within the sport, across all four of the UK’s nations.

This important partnership between the ECB and Cricket Scotland demonstrates a clear commitment to bringing together cricketing ambitions across Great Britain. As discussions continue, stakeholders remain optimistic about the potential impact of GB Cricket on both the Olympic landscape and the overall development of cricket in the UK.
