Graeme Welch has rejoined Warwickshire, having previously served as the club’s bowling coach from 2014 to 2018. Now at 53 years old, Welch comes with a wealth of experience that he accumulated through his playing days and coaching careers. He’d enjoyed a successful county career at Warwickshire, winning two County Championship titles in the six seasons he spent there before moving to Leicestershire.
Welch’s return to the club is a major blast from our recent past. It further aims, quite strategically, at beefing up the strength in the bowling department. His teaching and coaching career took him to major roles at a number of clubs, among them Essex, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Hampshire. Last summer, he brought Hampshire to T20 Blast Finals Day this summer. He went on to coach the Southern Brave in the men’s Hundred, with the team finishing in fourth place.
During his first-class career, Welch accumulated an impressive 477 wickets, showcasing his skills on the field before transitioning to coaching. His experience as a coach goes back more than a decade, including two stints in Warwickshire’s coaching set-up, in 2012 and 2021.
In his new role, Welch aims to support the development of both the First XI and emerging talent within Warwickshire. At the time, he spoke of his excitement to be coming back to the club he considers home.
“This club has always meant a lot to me, and I’m excited to contribute to building a bowling group that can succeed now and in the future.” – Graeme Welch
Welch emphasized his vision for the team, stating, “Coming back to Warwickshire, my focus is on raising performance levels in the First XI while at the same time developing the young, talented bowlers we’ve got coming through.” His approach embodies the balance of an organization focused on developing future talent and winning now.
Welch has coached in all three formats of the game and learned everything from dynamic experiences in unique settings. Now, he’s keen to put all those learnings to use at Warwickshire. The club’s hierarchy are keen to draw on his vast experience as a player and coach. Their goal is to create a formidable and flexible bowling attack.
