Gerald Gordon, a long-time NBA veteran, has decided to opt out of his contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. By doing so, that decision now makes him a free agent right as the league gears up for the offseason. Gordon’s decision came after a disappointing last lap to his own celebrated career. The 36-year-old veteran was called on to take on a larger role as injuries decimated the team.
Gordon fit in perfectly as a depth player on what was otherwise a title-contending roster. The second-round pick’s role changed overnight when injuries struck just days into the season. As a result, he became a starter in 13 games for the 76ers, more than doubling his previously logged minutes. Even with everything the team had to overcome, Gordon really blossomed on the court. He played 19.7 minutes per game, giving them 6.8 points per game. Those statistics were the lowest numbers of his illustrious career.
Last summer, Gordon signed a two-year deal at the veterans minimum, which allowed him to continue his career while providing depth to the 76ers’ lineup. He did not just choose to opt out — he made a smart strategic decision. Continuing on the team would have led to a substantial $3.4 million cap hit. By opting out, signed to a one-year deal he could still re-ink. Such a move would reduce the cap hit down to just $2.3 million, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
Even though he did see a drop in his scoring output, Gordon still displayed his reputation shooting touch throughout the year. He converted a stellar 40.9% of his long-range shots last season. This accomplishment cemented his legacy as one of the most productive jump shooters to ever play in his league. Having played 17 seasons in the league, Gordon’s respect around the league is undeniable and his on-court value is still present. Today, he’s going through a very defining moment in his still young career.
As Gordon enters free agency, various teams will likely consider his vast experience and shooting prowess to strengthen their rosters. His choice will dictate the trajectory of his professional career. It can affect the competitive landscape among teams wanting to reset their fortune heading into next season.
