Meanwhile Talor Gooch continued his strong form to secure his second win in only three starts at the LIV Andalucia. He finished the tournament on fire, shooting 8-under-par 206. Gooch closed with a 1-under-par 70, featuring four birdies, in rainy conditions on Sunday. This triumph is Gooch’s fourth overall title in the LIV series, solidifying his dominance in the sport.
Jon Rahm led all players in strokes gained tee to green at the Shriners, and finished strong with a final round 65. Among other great aspects like his strong play, which featured him making six birdies and no bogeys over the entire 61-hole competition. Even with his stellar performance, Rahm had to settle for no better than 2 nd behind Gooch on the money list.
Gooch’s road to victory featured an escape from a bogey on Hole 14. He recovered from that miss by playing the next 15 holes in 2-under par. He got himself important birdies on Hole 15 and Hole 18. His success further reflects his tremendous individual talent. Equally important, it shines a light on the irreplaceable help provided by his crew, Smash GC, captained by Brooks Koepka. The team ended up in a tie for third with 4Aces GC.
Mexico’s Abraham Ancer took third overall individually at 5-under-par with Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC team taking second place overall. Touring the course in 4-under was world No 82 Tom McKibbin, who shot 66. His impact led his team deep into the competition and established him as an Academy favorite. Albertson and Vesterby accounted for the next-best individual finish, along with South African Branden Grace tying with McKibbin for fourth.
In looking back on his win, Gooch shared a scene of jubilation and thanks.
“Two years ago I didn’t have a son, and my son just came and gave me a hug on the green,” – Talor Gooch
He emphasized the significance of this win, stating, “It’s so special. This game is not easy, and you don’t take good golf for granted. Just pumped to be back and pumped to be back on the podium.”
“I mean, today was a really good round. He mentioned that he was confident on the greens and felt like his game was really starting to come together.
“Honestly, I probably hit it better than I have in the last year and a half. Started seeing some shots that reminded me of some other good weeks, and once I got it going today and I felt comfortable on the greens, it was fun to put myself in that situation.” – Jon Rahm
