Glenn Maxwell Retires from ODIs to Focus on T20 World Cup

Glenn Maxwell, the Australian cricket star, announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) to concentrate on preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2026. Maxwell’s international debut in ODIs came in 2012 but it didn’t take long for him to establish himself. During the last ten years, he has scored 3,990 runs at a phenomenal average of 33.81. His exit ends a special era in Australian cricket.

With this, he completed a phenomenal strike rate of 126.70, which remains the second-highest in ODI history. His notable performances include hitting an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan during the Champions Trophy earlier this year and scoring the fastest century in World Cup history in 2023 off just 40 balls against the Netherlands.

Maxwell undoubtedly gave the highest honour in Australian cricket his all. In charge of winning two World Cups in 2015 and 2023. Further to that, he played a valuable role in helping lead India to its first T20 World Cup title in 2021. Apart from his batting ability, he has picked 77 wickets as an off-spinner, marking his true all-around genius.

In his last ODI at the Champions Trophy in March, Maxwell’s remarkable innings against Afghanistan not only highlighted his batting talent but capped off his ODI career on a high note. He expressed that it was time for him to step aside and allow others to seize opportunities in the team, stating,

Maxwell remains focused on improving the chemistry of her group as they prepare for their Olympic test event. He wants to contribute to creating a solid core of players as the team looks forward toward the next T20 World Cup.
