Australia clinched the T20 series against South Africa with a thrilling two-wicket victory, thanks to a stellar performance from Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell’s innings was punctuated by eight fours and two sixes – he was plenty aggressive in his assault. His half-century was especially important, as it was his first T20 International half-century in 11 knocks. At 36 years old Maxwell still showed that he’s a rock in tense situations. It was the final two overs that he stepped up most, with Australia needing 12 runs to win.
In a nail-biting finish, Maxwell struck two boundaries off South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi in the last over, sealing the victory for Australia. This victory sealed a 2-1 series victory for Australia. While tempering his initial prediction, it certainly illustrated Maxwell’s critical role in the team’s success throughout the World Series.
Tim David, reflecting on Maxwell’s impact, stated, “Without [Maxwell] playing a blinding innings, I wouldn’t be standing up here, so there’s been contributions from everyone in our team throughout this series and we’ve had so much fun.”
