Glenn Maxwell Injured in Nets Training Mishap

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell suffered a horrific injury netting practice. This unfortunate occurrence puts his prospects for joining the national team for the upcoming international friendlies in question. The freak accident at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui happened when batsman Mitchell Owen launched a huge shot that smashed just below Maxwell’s arm. This unfortunate occurrence has meant that Maxwell has been ruled out of the three-match T20 series against New Zealand taking place this week. His participation in the five-match one-day international series against India in October is now uncertain.

Maxwell has appeared in 124 international T20 matches for Australia. During the training session, he was bowling when Owen’s shot suddenly returned on him. Eyewitness Matthew Short described the moment, stating, “I saw [Owen] smoked it and then the aftermath. It hit Maxi on the wrist. It didn’t sound good.” The severity of the injury led to an eventual amputation, requiring a replacement for Maxwell on the football team.

Josh Philippe has been brought in in place of Maxwell for Australia’s upcoming five match T20 series against New Zealand. This news greatly disappoints Maxwell. It leaves supporters who looked forward to his playmaking presence sidelined and disappointed. Now 36, Maxwell is on the cusp of losing another chance. This misfortune adds to the growing spell of bad luck that he has faced in recent years.

In 2022, Maxwell broke a leg at his 50th birthday party after a guest accidentally fell on him. More recently, he was knocked unconscious following an unfortunate off-track incident when he fell from a moving golf cart during the 2023 World Cup. All three of these incidents illustrate the struggles he has faced both personally and professionally over the course of his life.

Maxwell’s absence will certainly be felt throughout the remainder of the tournament as he has been one of the most important players for Australia. Short is quick to highlight the remarkable resilience of Maxwell, stating simply, “Maxi’s been there done that twice now with a [severe injury]. He further added, “He was a bit disappointed but it’s just like any other injury. I’m sure he’ll get through it.”

Meanwhile, the Aussie team is getting ready to face off against New Zealand. They are still crossing their fingers for a quick recovery for Maxwell, as he is one of their most important players. His know-how and ability on the pitch will leave a huge void for the team. As they prepare for more challenging series to come, his absence will be increasingly noticed.
