Glamorgan have been in fine form, smashing Northamptonshire out of the park in their most recent outing. Ben Kellaway and Sam Northeast particularly impressed, form which laid the platform for a huge 424-run team total. The derby aired this week on Glamorgan’s home ground. It was a powerful display of finely-tuned tactical batting and effective partnerships, leaving Glamorgan clearly on top.
In reply, Ben Kellaway was in no mood to wait, going on the offensive as Glamorgan’s captain scored a run-a-ball 95. His innings featured an array of elegant strokes, including sumptuous off-drives and a spectacular lofted straight six off leg-spinner Calvin Harrison. Kellaway’s incredible innings came to an end when a bouncer from Harrison surprised Kellaway and he nicked it behind. He changed the course of the game long before that play.
Giving Kellaway solid support was Sam Northeast, who played a fluent supporting act in an innings-ending partnership of 141 runs. Northeast’s steady presence at the crease allowed him to build momentum alongside Kellaway, although he eventually edged a delivery from Justin Broad to slip, adding another chapter to the match’s narrative.
Prior to that point in the innings, Carlson had provided Glamorgan with much-needed impetus. He expertly identified holes in the defense and produced a brilliant fifty. Second, Carlson developed a key two-way partnership, running up an impressive 96 running partnerships with Northeast. In the end, he clipped a catch to short backward square leg from the bowling of Ben Sanderson.
Timm van der Gugten played an impactful knock down the order, scoring 61 runs to help push Glamorgan’s total. He struck a remarkable nine fours in his innings of 97. He partnered with Chris Cooke, who added another 87 runs to the total, showcasing the depth of talent within the Glamorgan lineup.
Even in the face of Glamorgan’s batting parade, Northamptonshire’s attack did impress at times. Justin Broad was the real hero for Northants though, claiming 3 for 15 at key points in the match. To compound Kent’s problems, Andy Gorvin took two wickets in the penultimate over to complete Glamorgan’s superiority.
