The New York Giants faced a heartbreaking moment during Sunday’s game as running back Cam Skattebo sustained a serious ankle injury. The injury occurred in the second quarter, about halfway through. Skattebo was attempting to make a catch on an over-the-shoulder pass over the midfield stripe when the injury happened. Sadly, his right ankle was caught under an opposing Philadelphia Eagles player, resulting in a gruesome dislocation.
Medical personnel rushed to care for Skattebo. They sent him to the hospital after they stabilized his leg with an air cast and loaded him onto a cart. The horrifying scene left players and fans alike stunned, as it became clear how serious the injury was. Sunday night, the Giants confirmed that Skattebo would have surgery Sunday night at a hospital in the Philadelphia area.
This injury is a huge blow for Skattebo. He had just recently emerged as the team’s featured back earlier this season. That’s because the Arizona State fourth-rounder has been enjoying a stellar rookie campaign. He’s already registered 101 carries for 410 yards with five rushing touchdowns to his credit. He caught his seventh touchdown pass of the season earlier in the game. He snared an 18-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Dart, his second receiving touchdown in as many contests.
Skattebo’s return ignited the otherwise stagnant Giants attack. In doing so, he displayed his versatility as a runner and receiver. His great spirit and positive impact on the world were evident to all. Philadelphia fans gave him a touching standing ovation as he walked off the field, acknowledging his heart and soul comeback effort.
Giants’ coach Brian Daboll released a statement indicating how much he felt for Skattebo after the news broke.
“Yeah, feel absolutely terrible for the young man,” – Coach Brian Daboll
Teammate Greg Van Roten, who was with Skattebo in the moment, recalled that moment and what it felt like to think he lost Skattebo.
“I saw him on the ground with his leg trapped,” – Greg Van Roten
>The team is still reeling with the reality of Skattebo’s absence for the rest of the season. With this injury, his rookie campaign is almost certainly finished. The Giants are simply out of the running now and need to shift their focus in a different direction. His contributions had been critical in rejuvenating their offensive attack, and replacing his production will be a monumental task.
As the Giants move forward, they will continue to have Skattebo on their minds as he begins the long road of rehab to recovery. The team is hopeful that he’ll be able to return soon. His fans look forward to seeing him grow into one of the league’s best young bigs.
