The New York Giants are among the teams keeping a close eye on this season’s breakout star receiver, Nabers. He’s been held out for much of the preseason so far because of a lower back ailment. The New York Giants are preparing for the real NFL season. They’ll open the new season against the Washington Commanders on September 7.
Nabers flashed some of that amazing potential throughout training camp. As of this summer, he seemed to be on an even higher level from a year ago, when he was completely healthy. His impressive performance had earned him a spot as a key player for the Giants, but health concerns have raised questions about his availability.
When Nabers didn’t complete practice on August 6, speculation began to swirl as to his condition. First, he played coy about his absence. His only defense was that he was “listening to the trainers” and the decision was “all in the plan.” Such a vague response was meant to keep fans and analysts in the dark as to how serious his injury was.
After beating up on the New York Jets 31-12 on Saturday night, the Giants officially booked their bit. What was particularly conspicuous, Nabers was not in big game. This is how he watched from the sideline in full uniform but not getting in the game. Individually, his absence has certainly been felt, as this team goes as far as I think his talents can take them this year.
Nabers missed all of spring training with a turf toe injury. Earlier this summer, he was forced to leave practice cold-turkey after awkwardly falling on his shoulder. These non-contact, repetitive injuries have raised questions surrounding his health and condition heading into the new season.
Though this was a major blow, all hope was not lost for Nabers’ rehabilitation and return. Although no one expected him to play, he looked like he was moving well in pregame warm ups, wearing street clothes. That’s why he was on the sideline during last Wednesday’s joint-practice with the Jets. It’s a sign that he’s still invested with the team, apart from the fact that he’s not taking part in any drills these days.
The situation surrounding Nabers remains somewhat unclear. As coach Brian Daboll noted, “Not going to get into any injuries,” highlighting the team’s cautious approach in managing their star receiver’s health. With only three weeks until the regular season opener, the Giants would be wise to consider giving Nabers the rest of the preseason off. This decision may have him in a position to be completely prepared for those critical, season-opening early games.
The Giants know that for them to be truly successful, a healthy Nabers is what they need. At least they’re resolved to get him on the turf. His previous performances have been instrumental. The team intends to ease him back in, putting his recovery ahead of a quick return.
Going forward, Nabers is focused on getting himself prepared for the season opener against the Washington Commanders. In any case, he still has much time ahead of him for rehabilitation and basic training. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that he’ll be prepared to perform when it counts.
